Mr. Pierre Leroux, Mayor of the Township of Russell and Warden of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (the “UCPR”), has announced that he will be stepping down from his political duties as of April 19th.
Following his departure, an interim Warden of the UCPR will be appointed to lead the upper-tier government until a formal appointment process is held.
“In accordance with the provisions of the Municipal Act, 2001 and existing By-laws, in order for the UCPR to initiate the formal process of appointing a new 2024 Warden, a new Mayor of the Township of Russell must first be appointed. While this process may take a few weeks, it is not expected to impact the operations of the UCPR,” said Mélissa Cadieux, Clerk and Director of Administrative Services of the UCPR.
“We are extremely grateful for Warden Leroux’s contributions since he became a Member of the UCPR Council in 2014. A strong advocate of our regional interests and well-being, his legacy will be felt for years to come. Today, we raise our hats to him by way of our appreciation, and we wish him all the best in his new endeavours,” said Stéphane P. Parisien, Chief Administrative Officer of the UCPR.
Mr. Leroux has been involved in municipal politics for 14 years. A Municipal Councillor for the Township of Russell from 2010 to 2014, he was then elected as Mayor. He also served on the Council of the UCPR for the past decade, assuming twice the role of Warden in 2020 and 2024. Highly involved in his community, he has chaired the boards of the South Nation Conservation and the Eastern Ontario Regional Network, as well as being a committed member of the Eastern Ontario Wardens' Caucus.
